About Julia RymutChronic Stress and Lessons I Have Learned I have always practiced natural
health techniques in my life. From herbs and acupuncture to home birth
and essential oils, I have spent my life studying health and my body.I thought I knew a lot. Several years ago, in 2006, I had the "Screaming Summer". For some reason, I was screaming at the kids constantly. Yelling, scolding, generally acting quite insane, I was continually upset with them. I assumed that this was just "one of the phases" that every family went through. After all, how many times did I say to put the forks in the dishwasher pointing up? And didn't I tell them to pick up their clothes? I yelled at the kids so much that I embarrassed myself. I gave a number "10" reaction for number "3" offenses. I often went too far and I became ashamed at how I was treating my family. I gave myself a major behavioral modification regime. I did affirmations. I breathed deeply. I would practice relaxing yoga every night. We had family meetings. I did everything with the assumption that the kids needed to clean up their act and I needed to find the correct parenting solution. During this time, and completely unrelated, I decide to do a health experiment. I began taking NingXia Red, a health juice with wolfberries because I had read that it would improve my eyesight. I gave myself 6 months on the juice to see what my eyesight did. After just 2 months on the juice, my screaming was gone. Nothing really was different--the kids still didn't pick up their clothes and the forks were still all wrong, but I was no longer a nut case. This began my investigation in to the effects of stress. Wolfberries Support Your HealthThe wolfberries in NingXia Red are a great anti-oxidant. Anti-oxidants neutralize some of the effects of stress on your body. The wolfberries also stabilize blood sugar and support the major organ systems. After reflection, I figured out that by taking the wolf berry juice I had reversed the effects of stress on my body. What is most astounding--I didn't even know I had been stressed. Chronic, Background StressBefore this episode, I had defined stress in its acute form. I thought of stress as those tight shoulders and headaches you get on a bad day. What I didn't know was that chronic stress can creep up on you. It lurks in the background and you may not even recognize it in your life. I had been raising my family alone while my partner worked during the week 100 miles away for years. Cracks were forming in our relationship--nothing big, just little niggling difficulties. Being on call, being the sole home-parent day after day, week after week had taken its toll. I didn't see myself as a single parent, and so I hadn't supported myself as one. I had tried to act like a 2 parent family with only 1 parent. I had completely depleted myself. This insight about how stress--that my behavior can reflect stress without me realizing it--was a bombshell. Suddenly I saw my stress everywhere--in my lack of creativity, in my lack of patience, in my lack of hope, in my burnout at the end of the day. I had been taxing my body so long that I had nothing left. Rebuilding from that time has inspired me to build this website. I want to help every mother recognize stress in her life and support her so that she can be a fantastic mother. When your body is depleted, you are not at your best. To be a
good mother, you must take care of yourself.
